The primary function of a Fire Alarm system is to give an early alarm of fire in a building in order to enhance the safety of the occupants, increasing their chance of escape and initiating the emergency services. A secondary function is to reduce the loss of, or damage to, property by increasing the probability of early detection and extinction of fire.
An Emergency Lighting system is an integral part of the overall design of a building. The overall objective of emergency escape lighting is to enable a safe exit from a building in the event of a power supply failure. In addition to ensuring a safe unobstructed exit, emergency lighting in needed to assist in the immediate location and operation of fire alarm call pints, refuge area and firefighting equipment and to minimise panic.
It is a requirement of I.S. 3218:2013 +A1:2019 standards that all fire alarms are serviced on a quarterly basis.
Periodic service visits shall be scheduled to occur at least 4 times in the year at intervals of no greater than four months. It is recommended that during the periodic service visits a percentage of the input devices are tested so that by the end of the annual period all devices have been tested and adequate records have been maintained to guarantee that 100% of the devices have been suitably tested. On completion of the testing a service report and Annual Certificate of Servicing is issued.
